Assessment

For each course, points are awarded from 1 to 7 and up to three additional points are awarded depending on the grades achieved in the extended essay and theory of knowledge for a maximum possible point total of 45.

To determine the number of additional points awarded the following matrix is used: add_pts_matrix.pdf

All subjects (with the exception of CAS) are evaluated using both internal and external assessments.  At Abbotsford Senior Secondary School, the externally assessed examinations are written in May of the students' grade 12 year.  Each Higher Level and Group 4 course has three exams while each Standard Level course has two exams usually written on the same or successive weekdays.  The different papers may have different forms of questions, or they may focus on different areas of the subject syllabus.  The grading of all external assessments is done by independent examiners appointed by the IB.

The nature of the internal assessment (IA) varies by subject.  Oral presentations are used in languages, experiments are conducted in sciences, and written work is used in the other subjects.  The internal assessment accounts for approximately 20 to 50 percent of the mark awarded for each subject and is marked by a teacher in the school.

An IB diploma is awarded to the student if the following are met:

  • At least 24 points are obtained
  • At least 12 points are obtained for Higher Level subjects
  • At least 9 points are obtained for Standard Level subjects
  • At least a mark of 2 is obtained for all subjects (but no more than two grades of 2 in total)
  • At least a grade level of D for both Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge
  • Successful completion of CAS requirements
