Careers

Our students will succeed in a much different future from the one we envisioned 10 or 15 years ago. It is our responsibility to prepare all children for success in whatever life path they choose, connecting learning opportunities with future career possibilities. We know that real-life experiences - like community involvement, gaining business knowledge, and hands-on-learning - build better students and life-long citizens.

Abbotsford Senior Secondary School's is committed to providing exceptional education through its Red Seal Trade Programs and Careers 10/12 classes. The Carpentry, Pro-Cook, and Hairstylist programs have stood out as exemplary initiatives that equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary for success in their respective fields.

The Carpentry program at Abbotsford Senior Secondary School has gained a reputation for its comprehensive curriculum and hands-on training. Students enrolled in this program not only acquire theoretical knowledge but also have the opportunity to apply their skills in practical situations. The emphasis on obtaining a Red Seal certification ensures that graduates are well-prepared for the demands of the industry and are recognized for their excellence nationwide.

The Pro-Cook program is another jewel in Abbotsford Senior Secondary's crown. With a curriculum designed to meet the highest industry standards, students are exposed to a diverse range of culinary techniques, nutrition, and menu planning. The hands-on approach, combined with theoretical knowledge, ensures that graduates are not only adept in the kitchen but also well-versed in the business aspects of the culinary world.

The Hairstylist program at Abbotsford Senior Secondary School is praiseworthy for its commitment to creativity and innovation in the field of hairstyling. Students are guided by experienced instructors who foster a learning environment that encourages artistic expression and technical proficiency. The program's focus on obtaining a Red Seal certification underscores its dedication to producing hairstylists who are not only trendsetters but also industry professionals of the highest caliber.

The Capstone projects in our Careers classes, undertaken by our graduating class along with our grade 10 students, have not only showcased the depth of knowledge and skills they have acquired throughout their academic journey but also demonstrated their ability to think critically, work collaboratively, and apply their learning to real-world scenarios. The commitment, creativity, and diligence displayed by these students have truly been commendable.

“In Career classes (CLE10 and CL12) students are given the opportunity to create capstone projects. These projects are centered around student interests and skills. The students are the drivers of these projects, and their teachers are a supportive sound board to help them achieve their vision.  With the framework of a capstone project, the possibilities are endless.

In CLC12 students have the opportunity to work with a mentor who is working in the field of their capstone topic. These connections are valuable opportunities that students may not have had outside of these projects. If someone wants to become a Speech Language Pathologist, we help build a connection with someone who has experience in the field. A student may also be interested in creating their own business, so we help connect them with someone who is self-employed. Creating these connections within our community helps students choose a pathway for their desired career.”

  • Mandelyn Erikson (CLC 12 Teacher)

These Capstone projects are a testament to the hard work and dedication of both the students and their mentors. The projects cover a wide array of subjects, reflecting the diverse interests and passions of our graduating class. Whether it be in the sciences, humanities, arts, or technology, each project stands as a unique and valuable contribution to our academic community.

“I learned a lot of different things about my capstone because it was about my own clothing business. I learnt that I need a bit more information about the business side. This project is something that I want to make a career out of in the future. I hope I can contribute to the community by bringing our brand to Abbotsford in the future. I was most proud of my business book. It took me a long time to make, and it turned out really well. If I were to give future students advice for their capstone, it would be to do it on something you are passionate about. Don’t be nervous because it’s something you like and have a passion for. Just have fun.”

Beyond the academic accomplishments, the Capstone projects have also served as a platform for students to hone their research, presentation, and communication skills. The ability to articulate complex ideas, engage in thoughtful discussions, and defend their findings with confidence is a testament to the well-rounded education our students have received.

Moreover, the Capstone projects have fostered a sense of pride and accomplishment among our Grade 12 students, marking a significant milestone in their academic journey. This experience not only prepares them for the challenges that lie ahead but also instills in them a lifelong love for learning and the pursuit of excellence.

As we celebrate the success of our Grade 12 students and their Capstone projects, let us also extend our gratitude to the dedicated educators and mentors who have played a pivotal role in guiding and inspiring these young minds.
